You already take magnesium at night. You bought it because everyone said to, and it did something, or it did nothing, and either way you are still reading articles about sleep at 10.40pm. This page is for you.
Short version: a magnesium tablet is one input. The night has three parts. Settl is built for all three: get to sleep faster, wake less at 3am, sleep deeper, wake up refreshed.
What a magnesium tablet does, and does not
Magnesium has one job in a sleep routine. It helps the body unwind. If your problem was a body that would not settle, a decent glycinate at a decent dose may have fixed it, and if it did, good. Keep it.
What it does not touch:
The head. Body heavy, mind still doing tomorrow's list. Magnesium is not aimed at that. L-theanine is, which is why Settl carries 200mg of it.
The 3am wake. Falling asleep fine and surfacing at 3.10am is a different problem from not falling asleep. Magnesium is not built for the back half of the night. Inositol is, and so is an electrolyte layer, because eight hours without water is part of why you wake dry and needing to get up.
The morning. A tablet that helps you drop off says nothing about how you feel at 7am.
If the tablet you bought was oxide or citrate from the supermarket, there is a separate problem, and does magnesium glycinate work for sleep? explains the form question properly. Settl uses magnesium glycinate at 146mg elemental, the same figure printed on the tub.
Side by side
| A magnesium tablet | Settl | |
|---|---|---|
| Covers | The body unwinding | Getting to sleep, staying asleep, waking clear |
| Actives | One | Seven, every dose on the label |
| For the head at 11pm | Not its job | 200mg L-theanine, 50mg chamomile extract 45:1 |
| For the 3am wake | Not its job | 900mg inositol, 1,000mg sodium, 200mg potassium |
| For the depth of sleep | Not its job | 3,000mg glycine, a full dose, not a dusting |
| Form | Tablet or capsule, often two or three | One scoop in cold water, which becomes the wind-down itself |
| Cost per night | Cheaper, no argument | More, because it is seven things, not one |
What the scoop adds
| Part of the night | In the scoop |
|---|---|
| Getting to sleep | 200mg L-theanine, 3,000mg glycine, 50mg chamomile extract 45:1 |
| Staying asleep | 900mg inositol, magnesium glycinate at 146mg elemental, 200mg potassium |
| Waking up clear | 1,000mg sodium. No melatonin, so no morning fog |
Zero sugar. No proprietary blend. Packed in Sydney, in a TGA-licensed GMP facility. Full panel on the ingredients page. If you want the reasoning behind the two biggest doses, read glycine before bed and what is inositol?.
Keep the tablet or swap it?
Keep the tablet if it fixed your problem. Honestly. If you take it and sleep through and wake clear, you do not need a second product and we would rather you did not buy one.
Swap to Settl if the tablet got your body down but your head kept going, or you still wake at 3am, or the morning is still flat. That is the pattern we hear most from people who come to Settl from a magnesium habit: it helped, and it was not enough.
Both? Some people keep a morning magnesium and take Settl at night. If you want to add the two up, the dose guide in the glycinate article has the numbers. Most people take Settl on its own and drop the tablet.
